Baby Milestones Birth to 3 Months!
As parents, we look forward to witnessing and documenting our babies' milestones! However, beyond seeing our babies grow, these milestones give us important information about baby development. Babies grow at rapid paces, and their milestones and movement patterns change just as quickly. Take a look below at expected movement and milestones for a baby from birth to 3 months old!
Able to lift head when placed flat on the floor for moments at a time and building up to 3-5 minutes at a time.
Both legs can lift up off the floor to kick while lying on their back.
Reach towards a toy while lying on their back.
Able to grasp a toy when presented to their hand.
Able to track a toy or face from one side to the other with eye gaze/eye contact.
Research shows that movement milestones develop in a predictable, linear way. Most often, the next milestone develops because of the skills gained from a prior milestone. For example, crawling on hands and knees typically starts at 9 months old. Prior to 9 months, babies are strong enough to be able to maintain tummy time and push into the floor to straighten their elbows and lift their chest off the floor. This milestone is crucial before successfully crawling.
🗣PSA: All babies develop at their own pace! You should only be concerned if your munchkin is significantly off from the expected timeline.
