This VS That: Tummy Time Pillow - A Guide for Parents
As a pediatric physical therapist, I am constantly getting asked about products. Are there any I LOVE? Are there any I don’t recommend? The answer is YES! One product in particular I get asked about frequently is tummy time pillows. “Dr. Hope, can I buy something that will really help my baby master tummy time?" The truth is that less is often more when it comes to tummy time, but the answer is not simply black or white.
Specialized products like tummy time pillows aren't necessarily bad, but they may not offer the versatility you're looking for. These products often serve a very specific purpose and can quickly become obsolete as your baby grows. Who doesn’t want a product that can be used for multiple reasons over a longer period? Tummy time is crucial for your baby’s development. It helps strengthen the neck, shoulders, arms, and back muscles, which are essential for achieving milestones such as rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. Additionally, tummy time can help prevent flat spots on the back of your baby’s head, known as positional plagiocephaly.
They often feature colorful designs and soft materials, and they are shaped to provide support under the chest and arms, making it easier for babies to lift their heads. While these products can be appealing, they are not a necessity for several reasons:
1. Limited Usage Period
Babies need extra support for tummy time primarily during their first 2 months. After this period, they usually gain enough strength and control to enjoy tummy time flat on the floor without additional props. Many tummy time pillows are designed for use beyond this critical period, which diminishes their relevance and usefulness as your baby grows.
2. Natural Development Encouraged by Simplicity
Using a tummy time pillow can interfere with the natural development of your munchkin’s strength and motor skills. When babies are placed flat on the floor, they are encouraged to use their own strength to lift their heads and move their arms, which promotes better muscle development and coordination, more freedom of movement. A simple, rolled-up towel or a nursing pillow can provide adequate support without impeding this natural process.
3. Cost-Effectiveness and Versatility
Tummy time pillows are an added expense that may not offer significant benefits over simpler alternatives. A rolled-up towel or a regular nursing pillow, which you likely already have, can serve the same purpose. These items are not only cost-effective but also provide many uses, as they can be used for various purposes beyond tummy time, such as breastfeeding support or as a cushion during playtime while the baby is sitting up independently.
4. Encouraging Parent-Baby Interaction
One of the best ways to support your baby during tummy time is through direct interaction. Getting down on the floor with your baby, talking, singing, and playing with them can make tummy time more enjoyable and stimulating. This interaction promotes bonding and provides a more enriching experience than any pillow could offer.
**It's important to pay attention to the recommended age for using these products. Babies typically need help with tummy time positioning only for the first 2 months. After that, they usually manage tummy time flat on the floor without assistance. Interestingly, some brands suggest their products for babies aged three months and older. However, the newborn to three-month period is the most critical for supporting your baby during tummy time!
While tummy time pillows can be a nice addition, they are not necessary for your baby’s development. Simpler, more versatile solutions can provide the same benefits without the added cost. The most important thing is to ensure that your baby gets plenty of tummy time, supported by your interaction and encouragement.
