Baby Milestones 7-9 Months!

Is your baby 7-9 months old? Are you enjoying smiles and laughs and more interaction? By this time, your baby probably loves playing with toys and is moving around much more! Check out the following to see milestones for 7-9 month old babies!

  • Able to play in a sitting position, lean forwards to grasp a toy and return to upright sitting

  • Able to go from sitting to lying on tummy and vice versa

  • Able to crawl forwards, progressing to crawling on hands and knees by 9 months

  • Able to bang 2 toys together

My favorite activity to do for babies in this age and stage of development is to play with toys that have multiple parts- like a shape sorter or puzzle. Babies at this stage learn from repetition, so scatter the puzzle pieces around your sitting baby and encourage your munchkin to reach to one side to pick up the puzzle pieces one by one. This repetition of leaning to one side and back to upright sitting will help work towards the milestones listed above.

Research shows that movement milestones develop in a predictable, linear way. Most often, the next milestone develops because of the skills gained from a prior milestone. For example, crawling on hands and knees typically starts at 9 months old. Prior to 9 months, babies are strong enough to be able to maintain tummy time and push into the floor to straighten their elbows and lift their chest off the floor. This milestone is crucial before successfully crawling.

🗣PSA: All babies develop at their own pace! You should only be concerned if your munchkin is significantly off from the expected timeline.
