Milestones at 10-15 Months
As you get ready to celebrate Baby’s first birthday, they are working hard on more milestones. The big one that comes around 10-15 months - WALKING! But, there are a few milestones that will take place before your munchkin starts jetting around on two legs, such as pulling up to stand! More fun milestones take place in this timeframe like clapping and turning pages in a book. Check the list below for everything to expect.
Able to pull to a standing position
Able to walk sideways (cruise) along furniture
Begins to take steps unassisted, uses walking as primary form of movement by at least 15 months
Claps hands
Uses thumb and pointer finger to pick up small objects
Turns pages in a book
Here are some tips for this stage of development:
Place all your munchkins’ toys off the ground- I’m talking on the coffee table, on the couch, on unaided own diaper boxes. This will encourage furniture walking and having your munchkin spend lots of time in standing positions
Use your closet mirrors/glass doors! I love using tape, reusable stickers, and suction cup toys to encourage little ones to stand at a vertical surface.
Have your munchkin stand on a pillow! Soft surfaces encourage more ankle muscle development and will help improve balance to get your little one feeling steady to take those first steps!
Research shows that movement milestones develop in a predictable, linear way. Most often, the next milestone develops because of the skills gained from a prior milestone. For example, crawling on hands and knees typically starts at 9 months old. Prior to 9 months, babies are strong enough to be able to maintain tummy time and push into the floor to straighten their elbows and lift their chest off the floor. This milestone is crucial before successfully crawling.
🗣PSA: All babies develop at their own pace! You should only be concerned if your munchkin is significantly off from the expected timeline.
